Summer is heating up in Gatlinburg! This August, don't let the heat stop you from exploring new cities and enjoying new experiences! Here are a few adventurous activities to try in Gatlinburg. 

#### Chase Waterfalls 

In the Smokies, there are lots of wonderful waterfalls that you can hike to! [Laurel Falls](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/tennessee/laurel-falls--2) is a great starter hike, as it is appropriate for a wide range of skill levels. This easy hike is less than 3 miles round trip and features a paved (but rough) path. The main focus of the hike is the best known waterfall in the park- Laurel Falls! Looking for a slightly bigger challenge? Hike to [Rainbow Falls](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/tennessee/rainbow-falls-trail)! This moderate, 5.4 mile hike will take you to the tallest single drop waterfall in the park. After seeing the waterfall, you can either turn around or, if you're an experienced hiker, continue the challenging hike up Mt. LeConte.

#### Get Your Head in the Clouds 

Take in some views of the Smokies while you're in Gatlinburg. Relax and take in the stunning sights along a chair lift ride at either [Anakeesta](https://anakeesta.com/) or [Gatlinburg SkyLift](https://www.gatlinburgskylift.com/). You can also take in the scenery at the [Gatlinburg Space Needle](https://www.gatlinburgspaceneedle.com/) or, of course, [on a hike](https://www.visitmysmokies.com/blog/smoky-mountains/hikes-in-the-smoky-mountains-best-views/)! 

#### Relax on the River (-or Don't!) 

Spend the afternoon [tubing on the Little River](https://smokymtnriverrat.com/) in Townsend (right outside of Gatlinburg). It is a fantastic way to beat the heat! Looking for an adrenaline rush on the river? Try [whitewater rafting](https://www.gatlinburg.com/things-to-do/outdoor-activities/whitewater-rafting/)! The Smokies are home to class III and IV rapids. The scenic rafting trips available are unforgettable! No experience is necessary. 

#### Rock Out 

Looking for an adventure that's a little bit less outdoors-y? Have a musical adventure this August! There are two marvelous music festivals taking place this month. The [Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival](https://www.smokymountains.me/2022-gatlinburg-songwriters-festival) will take place August 18-21 in venues all over town. If you're a hard rock fan, then you'll love [Monsters on the Mountain](https://www.smokymountains.me/monsters-on-the-mountain-2022), which will take place August 19-21.
